목욕탕이야말로 이용자들이 이성적 생각 없이 공간을 오롯이 즐기고 휴식하다 가는 공간이라고 생각됩니다.

감동적인 목욕탕을 만드는 것, 그것이 제 목표입니다.

When it comes to architecture, I surrender myself to my instincts.

I want to design a public bathhouse someday.
I think that the bathhouse is a space where users only can enjoy and relax without rational thinking.

이야기를 시작하기 전에

외적으로 느껴지는 형태들의 조화, 어떤 물성들의 대비, 분위기의 전환 등은 이론적으로도 설명되지만 건축물을 경험할 때 본능적으로 느낄 수 있는 것들입니다. 앞서 이야기한 세가지보다 훨씬 많은 것들을 감각적으로 느낄 수 있어요.

저는 건물이 자신만의 캐릭터를 가진 하나의 인격체처럼 느껴집니다. 우리가 누군가에게 매력을 느끼는 것과 건축물을 경험하면서 매력을 느끼는 과정은 비슷하지 않나요?

Before we starting the story,

The harmony of external forms, the contrast of certain physical properties, the change of atmosphere, etc. are theoretically explained, but they are things that can be felt instinctively when experiencing architecture. I can feel a lot more things in my senses than the three I mentioned earlier.

I feel like a building is a person with its own character. Isn’t the process of being attracted to someone similar to the process of being attracted while experiencing architecture?

‘직관적으로 보이는 단순하고 차가운 매스, 중앙의 계단을 올라가 돌아서면 햇볕이 비치는 따듯한 두개의 거실을 마주하게 된다. ‘

‘A simple, cold mass that looks intuitive, goes up the stairs in the center and turns around, facing two warm living rooms with sunlight.’

대비되는 존재들의 조합은 부조화를 만들것이라 생각할 수 있지만, 오히려 그들은 서로의 장점을 부각시켜주는 존재가 되기도 합니다.

You might think that a combination of contrasting beings will create dissonance, but they will also be the ones that highlight each other’s strengths.

코이노니아는 총 4개의 매스로 이루어져 있으며, 이 4개는 각각의 용도와 컨디션에 따라 다른 캐릭터를 가집니다.
1층의 투명성
2-3층의 반투과성  
4-6 층의 중력 감 
7층의 자유로운 이형성 

4가지 매스 중 어떤 하나가 눈에 띄기보다는 아주 조화로운, 각각의 개성이 은은하게 눈에 띄는 그룹으로 계획했습니다.

Koinonia is made up of four masses, each of which has a different character depending on its use and condition.

Transmitability of 2 to 3 floors
4-6 layers of gravity
the free dysplasia of the 7th floor

One of the four mass was planned as a very harmonious group rather than conspicuous, with each individual personality subtly visible.

이미 오래된 것의 거친 물성은 존재하고 있었습니다. 오래되고 거친 물성이 단점으로 여겨져서 감추어지기보다는 오히려 부각되었으면 합니다. 우리는 대비되는 재료를 개입시켜 서로의 장점이 가장 돋보이는 디자인을 찾았습니다.

There was already a rough physicality of the old. I hope that old and rough properties will be seen as a disadvantage, so that they will be highlighted rather than hidden. We found a design that shows each other’s strengths the most through contrasting materials.

어둠과 밝음은 서로 대비되는 존재로, 모든 공간의 균일한 밝음 보다는 어떤 곳은 어둡고 개인적인 공간으로, 어떤 곳은 어둠과 대비되어 밝고 활발한 분위기를 만들어주는 것이 많은 사람들이 넓은 공간을 효율적으로 활용할 수 있게 만듭니다.

Darkness and brightness are in contrast to each other, and some places are dark and personal rather than uniform brightness of all spaces, and some places are bright and lively in contrast to darkness, which makes large spaces efficient for many people.
